Our partner Thiago Araújo was featured in an ESTADÃO article on the decline in investment in the sanitation sector.
The main market transactions carried out in 2026 saw low levels of competition and, in some cases, there were no bidders at all. Furthermore, some projects were postponed amid a challenging macroeconomic environment.
Thiago believes that the lower level of competition reflects a change in the profile of the assets coming onto the market. “The new legal framework for sanitation has expanded the role of the private sector and allowed the most attractive projects to be put out to tender first. Now, the remaining assets require higher levels of investment, are more complex to operate and demand sophisticated modelling to maintain their attractiveness,” he explains.
